Adapting Woven Motifs to TattooMengadaptasi Motif Tenun ke Tato

Learn the meaning first

Each motif carries its own meaning. Understanding the motif you choose is a form of respect for Marapu Sumba culture.

Respect placement

Placement carries social norms. Traditionally an arm tattoo marked a married woman and a leg tattoo an unmarried one.

Layout

A figurative motif such as Njara (horse) or Mahang (lion) sits at the centre of the forearm as the focal point. Wrist or elbow borders can carry Mamuli and chains of Liakat or Patuala Ratu.

Technique

Blackwork fine-line geometry, or stippling and shading in terracotta that echoes the red-brown of Kombu dye and traditional charcoal soot.

Pahami maknanya dulu

Setiap motif membawa makna sendiri.

Hormati penempatan

Penempatan membawa norma sosial.
